Hindu American Foundation Condemns Heavy Hand of Malaysian Government Against Protesting Hindus
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fax: 301.770.7837
Email: ishani at hafsite.org
Washington, DC (November 21, 2007). The Malaysian Government has sought to thwart with a heavy hand a planned November 25, 2007 protest organized by the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF). The protesters intend to march to the British High Commission in order to submit a petition to the High Commissioner. The petition refers to the class action suit filed by the Malaysian Indian community against the Government of the United Kingdom for its failure to protect the minority Indian community’s rights when it drafted the Malaysian Constitution 50 years ago. In anticipation of the protest, HINDRAF leaders were arrested for “sedition,” a charge that should be dismissed as far-fetched, harassing, and intimidating. Malaysian Hindu activists have reported that water canons will be used to disperse the crowds. The Malaysia Indian Congress has been forced to disavow any relationship with HINDRAF, which leaves the police free to use brute force against the protesters. Reports of road blocks all over Kaula Lumpur, and the turning away of bus loads of people coming from throughout Malaysia are indications of the repressive tactics used by Malaysian authorities. Police and intelligence services have been checking text messages on cell phones for suspicious activity, and police are also closing a monorail train which passes by the British High Commission.
The planned protest is also in response to the October 30, 2007 demolition of the 100-year-old Maha Mariamman Temple in Padang Jawa by Malaysian authorities. Following that demolition, Works Minister and head of the Malaysian Indian Congress Samy Vellu, who is of Indian origin, said that Hindu temples built on government land were still being demolished despite his appeals to the various state chief ministers. According to Mr. Vellu, the Hindu community had no choice in the past but to build their temples on government-owned land, as they did not own any land of their own to build the temples.
“It is once again evident that Malaysian authorities do not care for minority rights, and their ire is targeted against Hindus who constitute an important bulwark to an authoritarian Islamic state. It is also a sad commentary that the nations of the world are ignoring what is a serious breach of human rights and minority rights,” said Ramesh Rao, Ph.D., Research Fellow, Hindu American Foundation.

HINDU AMERICAN FOUNDATION
ACTION ALERT
Protest the Banning of the Hindu Protest March in Kuala Lumpur
Dear HAF Members and Supporters:
Action Alert — Malaysia Update
Malaysian authorities have banned the Hindu protest march scheduled for Sunday, November 25, 2007 in Kuala Lumpur and organized by the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF; http://policewatchmalaysia.com/). They also arrested HINDRAF’s top leaders and charged them with sedition. The protest march is in the context of Hindu temple destruction in Malaysia and the assault on minority human rights in the Islamic Republic of Malaysia. Please call the Malaysian Embassy in Washington DC to register your protest, or fax or email the letter below to the Malaysian Prime Minister. The contact details are included below.
For HAF’s recent press release on this, visit http://www.hafsite.org/media_press_release_malaysia_temples.htm .

Sincerely,
Dr. Mihir Meghani
President, Hindu American Foundation

Embassy Telephone: (202) 572-9700, Fax: (202) 572-9882, and E-mail: malwash@kln.gov.my
Prime Minister Fax 603-88883444 and Emails: ppm@pmo.gov.my, abdullah@kdn.gov.my
Your Excellency Dato’ Ghazzali bin Sheikh Abdul Khalid:
I write to protest the destruction of Hindu temples by Malaysian state government officials, and your government’s refusal to allow Hindus to protest such temple destruction. These actions by your government targeting the minority Hindu community are an unfortunate reminder to the world of the serious threat to human rights of minorities in Malaysia.
Some of the Hindu/Indian leaders who were spearheading the effort to protest government action have been arrested on the grounds of sedition. Reuters reports that “Malaysian police swooped on Friday (November 23) on organizers of a planned protest by minority ethnic Indians, arresting them for sedition and warning of racial strife if the rally went ahead as planned at the weekend” (http://tinyurl.com/2oan9y). Hindu Americans take strong exception to such provocative police action and deem it an assault on the human rights of minorities in Malaysia.
We urge you to allow the gathering of Malaysian Hindus on November 25, 2007 to submit a petition to the British High Commission in Kuala Lumpur. The petition refers to the class action lawsuit filed by the Malaysian Indian community against the Government of the United Kingdom for its failure to protect the minority Indian community’s rights when it drafted the Constitution of Malaysia 50 years ago.
Unfortunately, your government restricts Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and Association contrary to Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948) and Article 10 of the Malaysian Federal Constitution. Consequently, the application filed by Malaysian Indians to hold gatherings was arbitrarily rejected by the police.
Your government has also tried to suppress a campaign launched by a Non-Governmental Organization, the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) to obtain 100,000 signatures in support of a civil suit against the Government of the United Kingdom. HINDRAF has accused your officials of intimidating and instilling fear in the Indian community. The intimidating tactics of your officials include the following:
a) Threat of arrest under the draconian Internal Security Act.
b) Threat to demolish temples (if gatherings are held in the temples).
c) Threat of arrest and criminal prosecution of venue owners for aiding in holding events.
d) Sealing of temples and all access roads leading to the temples.
e) Placing hundreds of riot police fully armed near the temple premises, etc.
We urge you to pay heed to the urgent calls of the Hindu minority community. Temple destruction should be stopped forthwith, and a high-level committee should be set up to systematically deal with issues relating to land on which temples stand, and to the rights of Hindus to worship at their temples. The public protest by Malaysian Hindus on Sunday, November 25, 2007 should not be thwarted.
Finally, we urge you to drop sedition charges against the HINDRAF leaders and release Mr. Waytha Moorthy from prison immediately.
Sincerely,
Member, Hindu American Foundation

dont u think we need to get additional backup from indians all over the
world? India is keeping silent i duno why.
November 25, 2007 at 10:34 am
Hi bloggers,
Kindly do not use vulgar words.. it defeats the purpose of having peaceful rally…
Lets get Udhaya and VeedaMoorthy to focus on solutions to get the rights aligned to the law. Additional vulgar comments would only create unwanted stuff which would distract HINDRAF’s focus..

Lets not to vote BN in coming election. We have seen for ourself on what the govt authority did during the rally. They treated all the supporters like ‘rubbish’…… I’m very sad to see the way they treated us. We indians have our own pride also, we shouldn’t be treated like slaves……. We must teach the existing rulers a good lesson, the only way, lets vote the opposition party in the coming election.
I’m surprised to see, despite all this havoc…… PM never even bothered to have a talk with the public/HINDRAF
MIC supporters, pls follow your heart……. don’t blindly support the existing indian leaders who cannot do anything for indian community…!!

There was case whr in Terenganu , ppl burn National flag but our Warriors waived flags in respect !! We see the difference tht the ruling party failed to see. Remember our ancestors also born here and work day/nite for this nation’s development . We r also BUMIPUTRA of Malaysia .

this is the evident of Khairy demo in front of KLCC convention centre, is it peaceful? of course because it was by UMNO and of course it was by SON-In-Law,so it was peaceful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=io3c3zwK55A
November 25, 2007 at 1:44 pm
i totally agree with VJ that we raised the malaysian flag, indians are united here as you can see in the rally. violence will never help. what we need right now is the indians all over the world to help us. i understand that each country in the world has their own community of indians so people who have contacts around the world, contact them !!! as specially ppl who are in india. tell the india government to put preassure on our government. this will help the malaysian government that we don’t work alone. hindraf has done the job, i thank them for the courage and the beginning of the frustration that you have done for the indians in malaysia.

November 25, 2007 at 6:33 pm
Malays have done wonders in terms of denying truth, while doing so, through policies of government raked in ill wealth for years. Malays are rich, I mean really rich.
Malays had certain qualities that other races in this country do not, but I must emphasise “had”. Qualities such as “speaking less”, contended, know how to read and understand the holy Quran (I know that nowadays Muslim kids spent 10 years of religious classes in school and end up not knowing).
But all done and said, the day malays deny their past, is the beginning of their end. Malays were Hindus once, as was the whole South East Asia, later some South East Asia went for Buddhism while the others went for Islam.
Who taught South East Asia races to plant paddy in a systematic manner? Who taught South East Asia races language skills, reading and writing?
The very essence of everything that South East Asia races are based on till today was taught by Tamils. Don’t you guys notice that South East Asia races have similar writing codes, that are because it is based on Tamil. It even sounds like Tamil.
For peninsula: Tamils called the local inhabitants as “malai allu”, basically means “people who dwell in the hills”, this would mean Orang Asli, for they dwell in the hills, what is known as malays today was non-existent.
As malays are well known to do, they incorporated this term “malai” whence they started to land in the peninsula from Nusantara, and claimed the term “malai” as their own. This race has this peculiar trait of claiming that which is not theirs.
Deny this, and you deny your past, anyone who denies his past, denies his future. Malays……….be my guest.
Guess who is the master race? The master race doesn’t doing some weird policy (NEP), or go around brandishing some knife, which if you really put some thinking into it, put the race on a sure path to beggary.
The reason why I commented as above is because I want malays to know that they are not tuan punya tanah.
For myself, as a Tamil, I will state what my forbearers have done centuries before, the truth is, no one owns this land, this land is owned only by – the one and only one – God.
This soil needs administration, not ownership. Accept that.

The only option the audiences have is to “doubt” the credibility of our mainstream media, and this trend is a big shame to the local media – I feel sad for their situation.
November 25, 2007 at 6:41 pm
NEP as implemented has always involved using government funds for the intended beneficiaries.
When it was the intention of the government to create the richest malay to head the list of richest individuals, now announced by the prime minister, the government adopts the policy to give public funds directly or indirectly to private individuals so that he/she can become the richest individual malay in the country.
Mahathir declared that NEP would have met its objective when the government was able to create a millionaire among the malays. It was the first time he extended the objective of NEP to make malay millionaires, and facilitated the use of public funds to enrich his cronies. Badawi now extends the creation of malay millionaires to become malay billionaires, and also to lead in the list of the richest individuals in the country.
It is clear to the whole world that NEP created unfair hardships to the non-malays no matter how Umno wanted to justify it. Unlike article 153 which was supposed to be reviewed after 15 years from 1957, NEP was to be implemented for 20 years from 1970. There was no provision for extension, and the only clearly stated quantitative target was that malays were to achieve 30% of corporate ownership after 20 years.
Badawi pretended that he wanted to be a prime minister for all Malaysians, and called for malays to forgo crutches. At the same time, he conveniently resurrected NEP and extended it to 2020, and his deputy suggested the continuation until 2057, for the present.
Prime minister and his deputy promised a year ago to reveal the methodology adopted by EPU, to challenge the results of ASLI finding that the 30% target had been achieved. His recent announcement makes ASLI finding irrelevant since NEP will continue forever, whatever the actual results show.
Ordinary malays appear to accept to pay a higher price for their motor vehicles when AP system which was exploited to enrich the well connected malays, they appear happy that NEP is continued even though NEP has caused a decline to their standard of living and level of earning.
They accept that as a cost for enabling malays to lead the list of the richest individuals in the country.
November 25, 2007 at 6:44 pm
Hahaha, once again we should appreciate the stupidity of government officials. This is great opportunity to embarrass them more……..not that they have not embarrassed themselves bad enough.
November 25, 2007 at 6:47 pm
Part 1 – The origin of pendatang:
· Malays – come from Indonesia and Yunnan.
· Chinese – come from China.
· Indians – come from India.
Part 2 – Why they come to Malaysia:
· Malays – easy life, food aplenty around those days, like fish from the river etc.
· Chinese – looking for a living.
· Indians – looking for a living and goes back.
Part 3 – Pendatang’s attitude:
· Malays – the words ‘relax la’, ‘bantuan kerajaan’ and ‘cukup makan’ are their daily words.
· Chinese – work, work and work but also spend.
· Indians – work, earn and save but spend little.
Looking at the mindsets of various pendatang. You tell me is it possible to be one Bangsa Malaysia? Never! For oil will never mix with water.
If you tell the Chinese to close down Chinese schools, the children will not taught to be hardworking anymore, so they become lazy and can they ask for bantuan kerajaan?
No! Right? So let the Chinese have more Chinese schools to teach the principle of hardworking, integrity, trustworthy etc, thus others can get more shares.
Those days the government control the Chinese schools is because of communist. Now where got communist again? Bodoh!
